Van Wert County Apiary Inspector Position Listing

Training and Experience: Minimum five years beekeeping experience, good “people skills,” and attention to details.  The applicant should be able to work independently and maintain and submit records punctually.  The person must have his/her apiaries registered with the ODA.

Duties/Responsibilities/Abilities:

1. inspect all colonies of registered apiaries within Van Wert County;
2. complete and submit inspection reports within the time frame requested by the ODA;
3. complete monthly reports;
4. answer questions from local beekeepers based on knowledge of facts;
5. have a knowledge of basic beekeeping management, diseases, and pests;
6. have a knowledge of approved control methods for honeybee diseases and pests;
7. ability to properly manipulate a honeybee colony;
8. ability to read and write common vocabulary;
9. ability to maintain a variety of records;
10.  ability to effectively deal with and verbally communicate with the public;
11.  ability to work alone;
12.  mobile and strong enough to walk in and out of an apiary and lift hive boxes as needed.

Additional Requirements:

1. must not be allergic to honeybee stings;
2. must hold and maintain acceptable driving record;
3. must have reliable transportation;
4. subject to varying environmental conditions;
5. must have all apiaries registered with the ODA.
