What a Mechanical Insulator Does 

Mechanical Insulation Workers apply insulating materials to pipes, tanks, vessels, ductwork, or other mechanical systems to help control and maintain temperature. 

Working Conditions 

A typical day for a Mechanical Insulation Worker is installing sheet metal or PVC jacketing around insulated pipes, tanks, vessels, and duck work with screws, bands, or adhesives to protect the insulation from weather conditions or physical damage. They might also read blueprints and specifications to determine job requirements. 

General Qualifications 

  • 18 years or older 
  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Driver’s License 
  • Drug-free and able to pass drug testing

Admission Requirements of JAC 

  • Transcript of High School Records 
  • Birth Certificate 
  • Drug Testing 
  • Valid Driver’s License 

Terms of Training 

  • Graduate with a four-year Apprenticeship Program with an associate degree from Ivy Tech (no cost to you) 
  • Hours of classroom instruction- 176 hours 
  • Length of probationary period- 800 hours
